Mapping and diagramming done as part of a major development initiative along the headwaters of the OKatie Watershed. Our team sought a greater understanding of the interconnected systems that govern this enormous site and presented this information to the local government and design community as part of a competitive pitch to earn a place at the table. Ashley Hall Playscape
DesignWorks LLC

PROFESSIONAL WORK: Concept Development, Design, Planting Plan, Construction Documents and Administration

Playful, joyous, childlike, fun. The redesign of the Ashley Hall playscape was such a blast - we had almost as much fun creating the design concepts as the children now have playing on the colorful rolling rubber hills, between the rows of filtering trees, and along the City of Charleston skyline. We gained a greater understanding of the importance of play and the importance of specific types of play - swinging, rolling, running - in speaking with the staff of the Early Childhood Education Center.

A small museum of Hellenic Studies, focused on Homer's voyages in The Odyssey, set on the grounds of the Dumbarton Oaks Museum and Research Center in Washington DC. Site visit and analysis to determine a basic grading plan to site and orient the building into the landscape as a partially sunken light shaft. Presentation of concepts through 3D modeling, hand draw architectural plans and renderings, and basic construction documentation of techniques that would be applied to the construction of this type of building.

ACADEMIC WORK: Design, Drawing

A primary school designed and built in Gita, Uganda as an interdisciplinary senior project at the University of Virginia. Our twelve-person studio worked together to develop a site plan, design concept, building plan and set of construction documents that were sent to the families of the children who would later attend this school to build. Students in the UVA Engineering School worked in conjunction with our team to develop a working cistern and electrical system to powered the school. The school was built with traditional construction techniques and using local materials available on-site and in the area by the families of the local children.
